VST2 is afaik no longer being supported or licensed for use by Steinberg. VST3 is going to be the standard going forward. Most DAWs should be able to use both 2 and 3, but my thinking is that you're better off reducing computer bloat and simply only installing VST3 if you care about future proofing your setup.

I only ever install 64 bit VST3 plugins now, and never install VST2 or AAX.
