Way back when. The goal of covers was not to play exactly like those that had gone before you. Your goal was to make the music your own. "Standards" were songs that were covered by various people bringing their own creativity into the process. Not sounding like the original recording bringing new life to the music.
Definitely would recommend younger players to go out and play covers or standards. It's easier to get stage time, plus you don't need to rehearse as much. The hours you spend rehearsing with your garage band are NOT the moments you'll look back fondly on when you're older.

Anyway, this has become a rather wonderful thread. Great music being shared!
