Outside of Devastor and Roktion808, a lot of these seem to be very basic waveshaper functions. If you gainstage anything based on just a singular waveshaper function too hot, it's going to sound like a complete mess. As has already been pointed out to you,try going in with the gain less hot and see if that yields any improvement. Though as thecontrolcentre pointed out, the input sound is just as important too e.g pads do not hold up well to a lot of plugin distortion and especially waveshaping.
If you want to get more mileage out of these basic algos then try some pre-post EQ. You said they are howling so there is probably too much top end and bottom end and hot gain going into the nonlinearity
