Free as in cost, code or both?Whether CLAP or VST etcetera, what's your favorite FREE software synth, old or new?
please list up to 7
I'm just getting back into music, so I'm less sure/experienced (and so might get back to you later), but one synth that I really liked some years ago that was free as in cost if maybe not code was Seismic. Unfortunately, it seems abandoned and doesn't work in my new OS-- at least last I tried. But I suppose one could run it on an old computer with an older OS.
Arido's nice-- additive, with maybe something else, like FM.
Speaking of FM, MS-2 is fun, funky and relatively simple.
And of course there's the recent actively-developed FLOSS Terrain synth:

Lots more in KVR's list that you might want to explore for yourself of course, along with the usual that people tend to list, like SurgeXT, Dexed, Odin2 or Vital, but none of those have caught on (if yet).
The Usual Suspects' offerings, specifically OsTIrus sounds great... and maybe Vast Dynamics' 4-OSC wavetable, Vaporizer2. I used to use Sunvox, that runs on 'anything' and is tight, small, self-contained and hassle-free.
There's also Monique that's recently been released as FLOSS and might be managed/dev'ed by The Surge Team. Here's an older video of it:

Lastly, if you get NI's Reaktor, you can download lots of free synths, maybe effects, at/from its online library-- an example I like, Aralsk.
