One thing is bugging me, though: Bitwig's browser/library list is now chock full of thousands of Hive factory presets.

Maybe you saved a wrong view by accident?
One quick solution is, before start typing, hit 2 times F1 (the second time just to be sure) then type and the first entry should be "Hive".

Second check the "Sort Order". Open the browser and right click on the first entry "Sort Order" -> "by Kind / Name"

Third save your preferred view / state
Open the browser, configure everything how you want to have it when opening the browser --- BUT be careful --- Bitwig stores different views whether you open on an instrument/audio/hybrid track AND if there is already a device or plugin in your track.
