It's an interesting perspective for around here, isn't it? But it's kind of how I approach things, too, at least initially. I often start with a bassline, add drums, then find one or two synth parts, or a bit of guitar, to fill out the sound a bit and, finally, make room in the arrangement for vox. Sometimes I might add a few more textural elements to fill out the sound some more but if the song only needs 5 or 6 channels, that's all I'll use. (I stopped separating my drums into individual channels when I started getting into Ujam's drum instruments, probably 6 or 7 years ago now. Even though I have recently gone back to Battery, I still don't bother.)
