I’ve been respectfully requesting that the place I work implement some procedures to better facilitate production, and I’ve been ignored. Of course, this bites us in the ass all the time. We had a huge milestone last Friday, and on Thursday I was inundated with last minute requests for obvious things that we should have been planning for and developing over the past year. Because it doesn’t effect management, nothing changes, but I can’t help but think the thing I threw together in the 11th hour wasn’t as good as something I could have had a decent amount of time to develop and iterate on.
Another issue is that with weak management, everyone “takes the law into their hands.” The person asking for a specific part of the UI becomes the art director and UX designer, even though they are neither of those things. The person implementing the door animation is now in charge of the sound design for the door.
The end results of all of this is a generic and somewhat scattered game that doesn’t support the story premise at all. I’ve received one sentence worth of art direction, which is to directly imitate another game… which has an entirely different premise. The thing that makes me the most angry is that I feel I’m the only one who notices any of this. There’s all this potential to make something cool and unique, but still accessible and fun, and no one but me seems interested.
