I haven't heard mercury X, but not sure that the 224 is really a bigger sound type reverb.Currently getting to know my Mercury X. It’s “bigger” sounding than the UAD 224. Could very well tie with CRP.
224 can work really well on vocals or leads, but to me it doesn't always sound great on its own, but sounds great in the mix.
If you want a 'big' reverb I think you need space, and to have the reverb on a send and slam it to let you bring the perceived up.
